Have a Question?

For optimum freshness, keep eggs refrigerated at a constant temperature below 20°C and always store them in their original box - egg shells are porous (around 7,000 pores per egg!), so they can easily take on the smell or taste of surrounding foods. Nobody wants an egg that tastes like an onion. If you do remove them from the box, use them in date order, and always discard any dirty, cracked, or broken eggs.

You would be hard-pressed to find a food that contains such an ideal mixture of nutrients as eggs, as they are one of nature’s superfoods, fitting into many diets and lifestyles. Along with high-quality protein, eggs are naturally rich in vitamin D, B2 (riboflavin), B12, iodine, and selenium, and contain several other essential vitamins and minerals.

You can check egg freshness by placing the egg in a glass or bowl of water. Fresh eggs will sink and lie flat on the bottom, while older eggs will stand upright or float. Additionally, St. Ewe eggs carry a date stamp for guidance.

St. Ewe Free Range Eggs are known for producing eggs with rich, golden yolks and a full, delicious flavour. Our Rich Yolk eggs are a favourite with chefs and home cooks who want standout, golden egg yolks for everything from vibrant brunches to rich pasta dough and sauces.

You can buy Rich Yolk eggs online from major UK retailers offering home delivery or in-store pick up, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Ocado (availability can vary by location and stock).

In the UK, there isn’t a specific certification as such that guarantees a “rich yolk”. However, much like the Richter Scale measures the strength of an earthquake, the Yolk Scale (Roche Scale) measures the colour and richness of an egg's yolk. St. Ewe Rich Yolk eggs top the scale with their delicious, quality yolks from British high-welfare free-range hens.

An egg yolk's vibrant golden colour comes mainly from a hen's diet. When hens eat plants and grains rich in carotenoids (natural pigments found in things like leafy greens, maize, marigold and peppers), those pigments are passed into the yolk, deepening it from pale yellow all the way to that rich, golden hue that St. Ewe Rich Yolk eggs are known for.

Golden yolk eggs aren't just visually striking - that deeper colour reflects a diet richer in carotenoids, which are natural antioxidants. While the overall nutritional profile of an egg doesn't change dramatically based on yolk colour alone, hens producing deeply golden yolks are typically better fed and better kept - and that quality shows with every egg cracked.
